Three pupils have so far died from a road accident that occurred on the Meru-Nanyuki highway on Friday.
On Friday, two students died when a Loreto Convent Msongari bus collided with a stationary bus. One more pupil died on Saturday while undergoing treatment.
Buuri police boss John Ngare said one died instantly after the driver lost control of the bus while it descended downhill, possibly due to brake failure, and rolled several times before ramming into a Kerugoya Boys High School, which was parked by the roadside.
Mr Ngare admitted that the situation would have been disastrous if the Loreto Convent bus had not ram into the stationary bus.
“The Kerugoya bus certainly saved the lives of many. It prevented the Loreto bus from rolling further and landing into a ditch,” he told Nation on phone.
He said the class seven and eight pupils of Loreto Convent Msongari were travelling to Samburu for an excursion.
Mr Ngare confirmed 62 pupils were on Friday admitted to Kiirua mission and Meru level-5 hospitals with 10 in critical condition.
The Kerugoya Boys bus was ferrying members of staff from Isiolo.
However, three Kerugoya Boys members of staff were injured while waiting for colleagues engaged in different activities in the town.
They suffered minor injuries and were admitted at St Teresa Mission Hospital, Kiirua.
Distraught parents and teachers flocked St Teresa and Meru hospitals and sought transfer of the patients to Nairobi.
Majority were appalled by the conditions at the hospitals on realisation that some of the pupils were sharing beds.
A medic at the Meru level-5 hospital said the accident had overwhelmed the facility.
“The high number of patients is truly overwhelming. The rural setting compared to that of Nairobi is quite different. These people are not used to seeing two patients sharing a bed,” said a doctor who sought anonymity.
The pupils are being airlifted to Nairobi Hospital for specialised treatment

  3. Very sad, may God take the 3 beautiful souls to heaven to be with him, may he also comfort the families left behind. My heart also goes out to the injured passengers, may the good Lord give them strength in their time of need and help them all to cope with the tragedy that has unfortunately befallen them.
