Former MP Simon Mbugua has been locked out of the Kamukunji by-election as the electoral body cleared seven candidates to battle it out for the seat.

Mr Mbugua, who lost in the PNU nominations last week, had presented papers to contest on a Vijana Progressive Alliance (Vipa) party ticket, but they were rejected by returning officer Joseph Masindet.
Speaking at Shauri Moyo Social Hall, Mr Masindet said Mr Mbugua’s Vipa party membership certificate did not have a date, and that his nomination certificate was dated April 26, while the deadline for parties’ mini-elections, were April 21.
Mr Mbugua’s supporters took issue with Kanu and PNU for denying the politician a ticket to defend his seat, which he lost following a court petition.
