Annan verdict

Chief mediator Koffi Annan who winds up his three-day visit of Kenya Wednesday met various leaders over the country's reform agenda.

The former UN Secretary General held talks with National Assembly Speaker Kenneth Marende and commended him for his role in the reform process.

The Speaker lauded Parliament's commitment towards the enactment of legislation to facilitate key reforms outlined in Agenda item 4 of the national accord.

Marende particularly cited the enactment of the Constitution of Kenya Amendment Act 2008, which provides a roadmap to the review of the constitution and referendum.

At the same time, the Kenya Red Cross Society Secretary General Abbas Gullet updated Annan on the situation of the Internally Displaced Persons across the country, and highlighted the extent of the drought currently ravaging the country.

Annan, who is the Chairman of the Panel of Eminent African Personalities, is scheduled to meet President Mwai Kibaki and Prime minister Raila Odinga at Harambee house Wednesday evening to brief them on his deliberations on the reform agenda with various interest groups.

He will thereafter give a press briefing at 6.30PM local time where he is expected to state his position on the pace of reforms in Kenya.

The former UN Secretary General is expected to present his recommendations on how to fast track the envisaged reforms.
